Les Amarreurs; painting the winter light

Les Ammareurs Winter Light 2mp

There are times when the light is just so perfect, and conditions right for painting outdoors, you just have to drop everything and go. A place I go back to for good afternoon light is the bay of Grand Havre with its little bays of Les Amarreurs and Ladies Bay.

This afternoon I sat on the sand as it was too windy to paint from my easel, my watercolour box next to me. I’ve been painting in oils a lot in the last few months, focusingon light and in particular light on the sea.

It was lovely to get the washes flowing again, capturing the subtle tones and colours in the sunlight bouncing off the sea and wet sand.
